John Helmer is the longest continuously serving foreign correspondent in Russia. He first represented the Australian Financial Review and Sunday Age in Moscow in 1990, and he went on to report from Russia for US, UK, Asian, and the South African press. In Australia he was on the prime minister's staff in Canberra during the Whitlam Government, and advisor to the Victorian government of premiers John Cain and Joan Kirner. He was also on the staffs on the Carter Administration in Washington and Prime Minister Andreas Papandreou in Athens. As a lawyer, he has run cases in the district and federal courts of Washington, DC; the Moscow city courts; the Victorian Supreme Court, the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal, the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court, and the New South Wales Civil and Administrative Tribunal. He has also been an advisor to defence teams in the UK High Court.
