Jay Garland on Mind Medicine with Charles Kovess - 22 April 2023
Saturday Apr 22, 2023
Saturday Apr 22, 2023
GUEST OVERVIEW: Jay Garland is a gay man born in Australia in 1961 and was diagnosed HIV+ in 2007 and with AIDS in 2008. He looked at numbers and patterns and began making graphs of the surrogate markers used to track HIV progression: namely, CD4+ T cells and HIV viral load. The patterns that Jay saw didn't make sense to him and when he queried this with his doctors they told him not to worry about these minor fluctuations. Jay saw a different pattern underlying the data and the doctors dismissed his observations. In his quest to understand this pattern, Jay started studying statistics, HIV and AIDS. This lead to calculus, epigenetics (the coding that sits atop DNA and alters gene expression) and many other subjects including biology, immunology and virology.
